pd-39__03872.jpg Berkley, CA residents voted for a sugar-sweetened beverages tax in February 2014, the earliest of its kind in the United States. By taxing sugary drinks, the city hopes to encourage a lot more people to choose healthier choices, such as water. First, the city conducted research to evaluate whether people had proper access to working drinking water fountains. The research utilized a GPS app to collect data on present water fountains in the city. This information was cross-referenced with demographic data on race and income collected from the US Census Community Study database. By cross-referencing the water fountain sites with the demographic facts, they were able to ascertain whether access to working fountains was class dependent. Each water fountain and the demographics of its bordering area were analyzed to reveal whether the site of the fountains or their standard of maintenance showed any correlation to income, race, or other factors. The fact that the fountains were working was not a guarantee that they were well-maintained, as quite a few were in need of cleaning and repair.

Archaic Greeks were renowned for providing the first freestanding statuary; up till then, most carvings were constructed out of walls and pillars as reliefs. Taking the form of four big flower petals which open and close with the circulation of water, the metallic water feature alternatively hides and displays a gold colored globe at the heart of the sculpture.
