Incorporate the Vitality of Feng Shui into Your Garden

Enjoy the health benefits of feng shui by introducing its design elements into your yard.

When incorporating feng shui design into your gardden, even a very small area works. If you have a lush, beautiful one, that is great, but even a smaller area works well with feng shui design.

The same tools you employ to introduce feng shui design into your home can be used in the garden. The initial task is to figure out the bagua, or energy map, of your home, as your garden’s bagua will be an extension of that.

There are five elements in feng shui theory, and you should understand how to utilize each of them to intensify the energy.

Feng shui design calls for the Earth element, for example, to be integrated into the northeastern corner of your garden, as that section connects to self-cultivation and personal development energy. A Zen garden with some pretty natural rocks is ideal for that spot, as the rocks epitomize the Earth element.

People thinking about adding a water element into their garden should place it in one of these feng shui areas: North (career & path in life), Southeast (money and abundance), or East (health & family).

The One Cleaning Solution to NEVER Use On Your Outdoor Fountains

Water fountains will keep working a very long time with routine cleaning and maintenance. It is easy for foreign objects to find their way into open-air fountains, so keeping it clean is vital. On top of that, algae can be a problem, as sun hitting the water allows it to form easily. Blend hydrogen peroxide, sea salt, or vinegar into the water to avoid this particular dilemma. Bleach can also be put into the water, however this is not the ideal option as it can hurt birds or other animals.

Every 3-4 months, garden fountains should undergo a good cleaning. First off you must drain the water. Then use mild soap and a soft sponge to clean the interior of the reservoir. A useful tip is to use a toothbrush if there are small hard-to-reach spots. Be sure to thoroughly rinse the interior of the fountain to make sure all the soap is gone.

Calcium and fresh water organisms can get inside the pump, so you should really disassemble it to get it truly clean. Letting it soak in vinegar for a couple of hours first will make it much easier to clean.

Build-up can be a big problem, so use mineral or rain water over tap water, when possible, to reduce this dilemma.

Finally, be sure to have a quick look at your fountain every day and add water if you see that the level is too low. If the water level falls below the pump’s intake level, it can damage the pump and cause it to burn out - something you don't want to happen!

The Famous Revelation Water Feature at the Gardens of Chatsworth

The well-known UK sculptor Angela Conner planned the Chatsworth ornamental outdoor water feature called “Revelation.” In 2004/2005 she was commissioned by the late 11th Duke of Devonshire to create a limited edition bust of Queen Elizabeth, in brass and steel, for the Queen’s 80th birthday celebration. Jack Pond, one of Chatsworth’s oldest ponds, had “Revelation” put up in 1999. The four large steel flower petals close and open with the flow of water, alternatively camouflaging and revealing a gold colored globe at the sculpture’s heart. The sculpture’s dimensions are five meters high by five meters wide and includes a metal globe coated with gold dust.

This latest fountain is an intriguing and innovative addition to the Gardens of Chatsworth, unique in that the motion of the petals is completely driven by water.
