Archaic Greek Art: Garden Statuary

The first freestanding sculpture was developed by the Archaic Greeks, a notable accomplishment since until then the sole carvings in existence were reliefs cut into walls and pillars. Most of the freestanding statues were of youthful, winsome male or female (kore) Greeks and are called kouros figures. Symbolizing beauty to the Greeks, the kouroi were designed to look rigid and commonly had foot forward; the males were healthy, powerful, and nude. In about 650 BC, the variations of the kouroi became life-sized. A huge age of transformation for the Greeks, the Archaic period helped bring about new forms of state, expressions of art, and a greater appreciation of people and cultures outside of Greece. pd-56__22508.jpg And yet these disagreements did not stop the growth of the Greek civilization. {

How Fountains can be Ideal for the Environment

Do you want to make your personal space just a little more beautiful? Well, you can add that extra touch and augment the value of your home just by adding a solar water fountain. Solar powered fountains can be a wiser investment versus electric ones because they not only improve one's well-being but they offer other interesting financial perks. Even though there may be a greater cost at the beginning, the long-term investment will make it worthwhile. Electrical power deficits will no longer impede utilizing your fountain since it will run on the energy of the sun.

Constant running water fountains will probably lead to a higher electric bill at the end of the month. Although short-term costs might be higher than you had predicted, don't forget that your home is increasing in value.

The issue with using more electricity is not solely about our bills, the effect on the environment is considerable. Solar driven water fountains are a good option to becoming “green”. Using solar power to run a water feature is not only worthwhile to our environment but it also heats and cools our homes.

Less maintenance is a benefit of installing this kind of fountain. As there is no electrical motor that can get clogged, little cleaning is required. And since there is little cleaning to do, you will have more time to play!

Reasons to Buy Your Own Pond Fountain

The immense gorgeous ones that are found in front of nice buildings and in public squares are what one tends to think of when picturing a fountain. But they actually come in a variety of styles and proportions that are suitable for smaller spaces. A pond fountain can be a great accessory to your own yard.

Two good things will take place if you put in one of your own. First are the beautiful aesthetics and peaceful nature of fountains.

What better way to wind down than to listen to the trickle of water and experience its beauty. You will see your area benefitting from its elegance, too. Additionally, when you have friends over, they will want to hang out around your gorgeous fountain, making your get-togethers even more interesting.

Another benefit is that such a water feature will supply the fish in your pond with fresher, healthier water. A pond fountain will oxygenate the water by keeping it circulating, which is great for fish. Your fish will survive a longer time because of the continuously flowing, aerated water. You should see healthier plant life too.

Santa Maria in Cosmedin: A Roman Fountain Worth Visiting

Amazing finds of both Christian and pagan origin have been made by archaeologists and restorers in the area of Santa Maria in Cosmedin in Rome. Found in the portico of the nearby basilica one can see the celebrated marble sculpture known as the Bocca della Verità (Mouth of Truth). Since the Santa Maria in Cosmedin fountain (1719) was situated off the beaten track, it remained mostly unknown. It was said that there was nothing worth seeing in this area, as it was abject and abandoned making it an unfriendly place to visit. It was a this time that Pope Clement XI mandated the Italian architect Carlo Bizzaccheri to put up a fountain to modernize the square outside the church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin. Work on the church's foundation started on on August 11, 1717.

The blessing of the first stone to be placed in the foundation was followed by medals being thrown in bearing the images of the Blessed Virgin, for whom the church is named, and St. John the Baptist, the patron saint of water.
