Agrippa's Amazing, but Mostly Forgotten Water-Lifting Technology

The admiration Agrippa’s water-lifting invention earned from Andrea Bacci in 1588 was short-lived. 50024plbz__07215.jpg It could be that the Acqua Felice, the second of Rome’s early modern aqueducts made the system outdated when it was attached to the Villa Medici in 1592. Its success might have been momentary but the device devised by Camillo Agrippa was yet different from anything developed in Italy during the time frame that separated the contemporary age from classic Rome. Renaissance gardens of the late sixteenth century were home to works such as musical fountains, scenographic water exhibits and water caprices (giochi d’acqua), but these were not outfitted with water in ways which violated gravity itself.

The First Fountains recorded in Human History.

Water fountains were initially practical in function, used to deliver water from canals or creeks to towns and hamlets, providing the residents with clean water to drink, wash, and prepare food with. A source of water higher in elevation than the fountain was required to pressurize the flow and send water spraying from the fountain's spout, a system without equal until the later part of the 19th century. Commonly used as monuments and commemorative edifices, water fountains have impressed men and women from all over the globe all through the centuries. The contemporary fountains of today bear little likeness to the very first water fountains. Crafted for drinking water and ceremonial purposes, the initial fountains were basic carved stone basins. The oldest stone basins are believed to be from about 2000 BC. Gravity was the energy source that controlled the earliest water fountains. Drinking water was provided by public fountains, long before fountains became decorative public monuments, as striking as they are practical. The people of Rome began building elaborate fountains in 6 B.C., most of which were metallic or stone masks of wildlife and mythological characters. Water for the communal fountains of Rome was delivered to the city via a complex system of water aqueducts.

Gardens of Chatworth and its Revelation Waterworks

Angela Conner, the well-known British sculptor, crafted “Revelation,” the latest addition to the appealing outdoor fountains of Chatsworth. The late 11th Duke of Devonshire commissioned her, because of her work in brass and steel, to create a limited edition bust of Queen Elizabeth in commemoration of the Queen’s 80th birthday bash. One of Chatsworth’s oldest ponds, Jack Pond, had “Revelation” mounted in it in 1999. It takes the shape of four big flower petals designed from steel which open and closes with the water movement, alternatively hiding and displaying a gold colored globe at the sculpture’s center. Standing five meters high and five meters wide, the globe was crafted from steel and then coated with gold dust. This newest water feature is an intriguing and interesting improvement to the Gardens of Chatsworth, because the motion of flower petals is totally operated by water.
