Chatsworth Gardens and its Revelation Water Fountain

The well-known British sculptor Angela Conner designed the Chatsworth decorative exterior water feature called “Revelation.” In 2004/5 she was commissioned by the now deceased 11th Duke of Devonshire to produce a limited edition bust of Queen Elizabeth, in brass and steel, for the Queen’s 80th birthday celebration. One of Chatsworth’s first ponds, Jack Pond, had “Revelation” placed in it in 1999. s_365_resoot__62101.jpg It takes the form of four big flower petals crafted from steel which opens and close with the water flow, alternately concealing and exposing a golden globe at the sculpture’s center. A steel globe painted with gold dust was integrated in the sculpture, which rests five meters high and five meters in width. The flower petals move depending on the circulation of water, making this installation an intriguing addition to the Chatsworth Garden grounds.

Just years afterward, in 1592, the earliest contemporary Roman waterway, the Acqua Felice, was hooked up to the Medici’s villa, possibly making the device obsolete. Even though it’s more probable that it was simply disposed of when Ferdinando renounced his cardinalship and returned back to Florence, securing his place as the Grand Duke of Tuscany, following the loss of his brother, Francesco di Medici, in 1588.

Renaissance landscapes of the later part of the 16th century were home to works like melodious fountains, scenographic water exhibits and water caprices (giochi d’acqua), but these were not filled with water in ways that defied the force of gravity itself.
