Gardens of Chatworth: The Revelation Fountain

“Revelation,” the newest inclusion to the decorative garden fountains of Chatsworth, was designed by recognized British sculptor Angela Conner. In commemoration of the Queen’s 80th birthday celebration, she was mandated by the late 11th Duke of Devonshire to build a limited edition bust of Queen Elizabeth made of brass and steel in 2004. In 1999 Revelation was mounted in Jack Pond, one of Chatsworth’s earliest ponds.

The four large metallic flower petals open and close with the flow of water, alternatively concealing and showing a golden globe at the sculpture’s center. Standing five meters high and five meters wide, the globe was crafted from metal and then coated with gold dust. Attributes of Outdoor Statuary in Archaic Greece

Archaic Greeks were well known for providing the first freestanding statuary; up until then, most carvings were made out of walls and pillars as reliefs. Kouros figures, sculptures of adolescent, attractive male or female (kore) Greeks, made up the majority of the sculptures. The kouroi, viewed as by the Greeks to represent beauty, had one foot extended out of a rigid forward-facing pose and the male figurines were always nude, with a compelling, sturdy shape. The kouroi became life-sized starting in 650 BC. A significant age of modification for the Greeks, the Archaic period brought about more forms of government, expressions of art, and a higher appreciation of people and customs outside of Greece. Throughout this time and other periods of historical tumultuousness, clashes often took place, among them battles fought between city-states such as the Arcadian wars and the Spartan invasion of Samos.
