Fountains: An Invitation for Your Four-Legged Friends and Visiting Birds

Anyone who has bird feeders knows that outdoor water fountains bring in wildlife. The truth is that birds require water to: drink, bathe and preen. Birds including robins, thrushes, orioles, or warblers prefer the motion of water from a fountain and are not necessarily drawn to bird feeders. Birds are often drawn to outdoor fountains because of their moving water rather than the standing water found in bowl-shaped bird baths. Trickling fountains that splash around are audible from far away, attracting even more birds. 94_130_3404_reshoot__94469.jpg

Dogs are attracted to fountains mainly because they provide drinking water. Hot days drive dogs and cats to anxiously look for the freshest water around. Fountains generally need little cleaning due to their constantly flowing water, whereas birdbaths need to be regularly serviced because they easily collect debris.

Garden Fountains: A Beautiful Way to Celebrate Someone Special

Garden fountains make ideal and unique commemorative pieces. Many traditional rituals have been done away with in today’s world. Yet most cultures even nowadays create memorials to honor their dead. Some memorials might incorporate a number of personal items. They come in many shapes and sizes, and backyard garden fountains are very common. Adding personal items such as photos or a nameplate, planting a tree, or holding yearly remembrance ceremonies at the fountain will make the garden fountain more unique to your loved one.

Garden fountains help you to honor loved ones you have lost. Be thankful for the achievement, abundance, and good fortune of the defunct with the emblematic flowing water of a fountain. It is highly recommended to buy a high quality, sturdy garden fountain that is impervious to bad weather so that it will last a very long time. You want to ensure your garden fountain is going to endure once you get it put in.

The Demand for Water Features in Japanese Landscapes

Japanese gardens usually include a water element. Since Japanese water fountains are viewed as symbolic of physical and spiritual cleansing, they are often positioned in the doorway of buildings or shrines. It is unusual to see extravagantly-designed Japanese fountains because the emphasis is supposed to be on the water itself.

Bamboo is a popular material to use for spouts and therefore often integrated into water fountains. The water moves through the bamboo spout and accumulates in the stone basin below. Even when new, it should be crafted to look as if it has been outside for a long time. So that the fountain appears at one with nature, people normally decorate it with natural stones, pretty flowers, and plants. As you can perhaps deduce, this fountain is symbolic rather than just decorative.

If you are hoping for another sort of look and feel, you can also get a fountain built of stone, place it in a bed of gravel, and decorate it with natural stones and live bamboo. Eventually moss begins to creep over the stones and cover them, and as that happens the area starts to look more and more like a natural part of the landscape.

Anyone who has an extensive spot to work with can, of course, install a much larger water feature. Popular water feature extras are a koi pond or any sort of tiny pool, or even a meandering brook.

There are different options if you do not want to put water in your Japanese fountain. Pretty rocks, sand, or gravel are ideal alternatives to actual water, as they can be used to symbolize the water. In addition, flat rocks can be laid out close enough together to give the impression of a babbling brook.

Gardens of Chatworth: The "Revelation" Water Feature

Designed by well-known English sculptor Angela Conner, Revelation is the most recent addition to the Chatsworth ornamental outdoor fountains.

She was mandated by the deceased 11th Duke of Devonshire to create a limited edition bust of Queen Elizabeth, in 2004/5 in commemoration of the Queen’s 80th birthday. Jack Pond, one of Chatsworth’s most venerable ponds, had “Revelation” installed in 1999. The four large metallic petals open and close with the circulation of water, alternately camouflaging and revealing a golden globe at the sculpture’s heart. The sculpture’s proportions are five meters in height by five meters wide and incorporates a steel globe painted with gold dust. This newest water fountain is an intriguing and interesting addition to the Gardens of Chatsworth, unique in that the movement of the flower petals is entirely driven by water.

Interestingly one of Seven Wonders of the World, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, were merely terraced rooftop gardens. They were water-proof and developed to be developed over a large, curved stone substructure that kept substantial storage rooms below. Water came to the terraces through hydraulic devices and the soil was deep enough to grow trees with efficiency. Preferred plants were thyme, poppy, anise, and rosemary.
